About Bill
Bill Winter is a Hudson Valley photographer known for capturing the quiet beauty of nature and the dramatic moments when light, landscape, and sky come together. His work focuses on the changing seasons, mountain landscapes, and carefully timed moonrises that transform familiar places into something extraordinary.
Growing up in the Bronx during the 1970s, Bill spent countless hours exploring the woods and trails around Seton Falls Park. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. Although life eventually pulled him away from that connection, decades later he found his way back—rediscovering the same sense of wonder while hiking and exploring the forests, mountains, and rivers of New York.
Photography became a natural extension of that journey. After receiving a Pentax ME-Super as a birthday gift, Bill immersed himself in learning the craft—studying how light, timing, and composition work together to capture a fleeting moment. While the tools have evolved from film to digital, the pursuit remains the same: being present when nature reveals something special.
Many of Bill’s photographs feature precisely timed moonrises and moonsets—moments that exist for only a few minutes when the moon aligns perfectly with the landscape. Capturing these scenes often requires careful planning, patience, and returning to locations again and again until conditions are just right.
Today Bill can often be found hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, or skiing throughout the Hudson Valley and surrounding mountains, always with a camera close at hand. His goal is simple: to share the beauty, calm, and wonder of the natural world through images that bring a sense of place into the homes and spaces where people live and work.
